TEXTURES VOL.I
Experimenting sound textures is the root of every project I work on. Coming up with an original sound palette is essential element on my creative process. Usually, it consists of a mix of organic manipulations, voices, instruments-sampling, and complex synthesis. I love listening to it just like that. Daydreaming into the ambient core of the tracks, for hours.
TEXTURES VOL.I
Directed by François Hoskovec
Ecoute Moi is an experimental short film about a young deaf boy named ‘Nathan’ and his relationship with music.
During an evening party in a live entertainment bar, he falls under the spell of a mysterious musician girl and her strange instrument …
The sound had a premium role in this story, so it was really important to make impactful artistic choices. The audience had to feel the emotional sensations experienced by the character, in disturbing or pleasant moments.
During the first part of the movie the main character wears hearing aid, so we did a precise frequency filtering in two groups : one for the intern sensations with low bass frequencies, and the other for the device retranscription. We consulted scientific studies to best reproduce the functioning of a real hearing aid, and assumed an unpleasant and imprecise sound close to reality, with crackles and hum.
After the Hearing Aid violent crash, we enter for the first time in his sound world, and this major change acts as a real relief, with intern and dull vibrations. The appearance of the uncommon beat melody from the Handpan starts a hypnotic relationship between Nathan and the girl, through the pulse of the music. Gradually, we’ve operated a frequency opening of the mix, to express the sensory connection and the dreamworld that Nathan is coming into. The sound will continue to evolve throughout the movie, clear and shimmered in the purest sequence, or will return rough and messy when Nathan’s mind will be lost between dream and reality …
All through the story, Nathan’s emotions are accompanied by an extradiegetic music composed of complex textures and soundscapes, which have a very dramatic importance. I experimented granular synthesis on the Handpan or on the voice recordings and proceeded organic and electronic audio manipulations to come up with an intimate soundtrack.
